‘Magnificent Seven’ First Look: Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt Saddle Up
After the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy, newly-minted A-list star Chris Pratt had his pick of projects. He quickly signed on to star in another franchise, Jurassic World, which somehow made him an even bigger star. Then came a more curious choice: a remake of The Magnificent Seven. We weren’t quite sure what to make of this film, which would pair Pratt with Denzel Washington, but now that the first photos from the film have arrived, how can we not see a film with Chris Pratt and Denzel looking this badass?
In addition to Pratt and Denzel, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Ononfrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier round out the titular seven. The film marks the reunion of Washington, Hawke and director Antoine Fuqua, who all worked together on 2001’s Training Day.
The photos come to us from USA Today, who share a bit more information on the film itself. Denzel plays a dude with big ole muttonchops (they were his idea). Hawke plays a Cajun named Goodnight Robicheaux, while Pratt plays Chris Farraday, a character described as “charming.” Chris Pratt playing a “charming” character, who would’ve thunk it? The cast members are not specifically modeled after any of the characters from the 1960 John Sturges original, but Pratt seems to be playing a mish-mosh of Yul Brenner and Steve McQueen’s characters.
Fuqua’s filmmography has proved to be a mix bag — for every Training Day, there’s a Southpaw — but here’s hoping that with this cast, this is one of his more enjoyable movies.
The Magnificent Seven opens in theaters on September 23.
