Major Delays Expected in Nacogdoches Construction Zone on Sept 8

The south side of Nacogdoches has become known as ground zero when it comes to road construction.  It's still going to be sometime in mid-2023 before the Highway 59 flyover project is expected to be completed, but it's going to be beautiful.  If you take a look at the construction already done east of the hotels, you'll see just how far workers and engineers have come so far.

But, as I mentioned, we are still about another 2 years away from the delays, road closures, detours and other inconveniences finally ending.  Over the past few weeks, lane closures have been taking place as construction crews work to put up the bridge beams in the median area of Highway 59, just to the south of Loop 224.  These beams will then support the sections of roadways that will connect to the new overpass over Highway 59.

The Lufkin District of the Texas Department of Transportation is alerting motorists travelling in the construction zone in Nacogdoches on Wednesday that they could expect MAJOR delays. According to TxDOT, westbound traffic at State Loop 224 East will be redirected to the exit ramp and through the Highway 59 traffic light in order to continue west on State Loop 224. This is closure is necessary so that construction crews will be allowed to continue laying culverts beneath the loop near Old Lufkin Road and on through the median.

Once again, TxDOT expects MAJOR delays through this portion of the construction area today (Wednesday), so motorists are advised to exercise patience or seek alternate routes. Message boards are in place to help maneuver the detour.
