Nacogdoches PD Releases Details on Overnight Pedestrian Fatality
A tragic accident took place this morning (7/7) on the South Street 'viaduct' bridge in Nacogdoches. This is the bridge which is located just south of downtown and goes over the area where events such as the Freedom Fest take place
The Nacogdoches Police Department is reporting through their Facebook Page that they responded to a major accident early this morning in the 800 block of South Street. Officers arrived on the scene around 3:15 a.m. When officers arrived they found a 2020 Chevy Malibu that was traveling northbound on South Street. had struck a pedestrian that was walking in the roadway. City of Nacogdoches Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, however the pedestrian was pronounced deceased by the Justice of the Peace.
The driver of the Chevy Malibu was not injured in the accident and is fully cooperating with the investigation. No citations have been issued at this time. The victim has been identified as Francisco Mendez, 58 years of age, from Nacogdoches. Nacogdoches Police closed down both lanes of traffic on the bridge for several hours following the accident.
There are sidewalks located on both sides of the northbound and southbound lanes of this South Street bridge. Information as to whether the pedestrian was walking on the sidewalk, the roadway, or on the small concrete divider has not been released as of yet. The Traffic Division from the Nacogdoches Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident. When more information is released, we will report it in an updated story on our KICKS 105 App.
