Riley Green’s ‘Cold Beer With Your Name on It’ Cover Fits So Right [Watch]
You could say Riley Green and Josh Thompson were cut from the same cloth — just hold up the newcomer's cover of "Cold Beer With Your Name on It" as proof.
Both men grew up in hard-working families; Thompson's did concrete, while Green's did construction. Both men like to hunt. Sure, they grew up on opposite ends of the country, but the "I Wish Grandpas Never Died" singer says they hit it off immediately in songwriting rooms.
"It’s crazy to be in a room with someone like that that’s not doing the artist thing anymore and think, ‘How in the world did Josh Thompson not become the biggest thing ever?'" the newest RISERS pick wonders.
"Cold Beer With Your Name on It" — written by Brent Anderson and Clint Daniels — was one of Thompson's final country singles, released while he was on Show Dog-Universal. It's a song about lost love, which is something else the two men have in common. Green writes and sings about that often, with no end to his conviction. "Bettin' Man" and "In Love by Now" are two songs he's released from his debut Different 'Round Here album that find him brokenhearted. The reason he chose this song as his RISERS cover? He's just a fan.
"I was a big Josh Thompson fan when he had that song ‘Way Out Here,'" he says, referring to the title track from Thompson's 2010 album. "That whole record was great to me, I was a fan."
