Texas Runner Passes Away Following High School Cross Country Meet

On a humid morning, the District 3-6A Cross Country Meet was held in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday, October 13.

The boy's team from Weatherford took home the district championship, followed by the teams from Fort Worth Paschal, Hurst Bell, and Fort Worth Chisholm Trail.

Running for the team from Chisholm Trail was a sophomore named Angel Hernandez. He passed a couple of runners over the final 100 yards on his way to a 5K personal best of 19:33.94.

According to a report in Texas Mile Split, Hernandez collapsed after crossing the finish line. Trainers attended to Hernandez and he appeared to be responding to treatment, however, his pulse weakened a short time later. Life-saving measures were started before he was taken to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Hernandez did not survive.

No official cause of death has been revealed as of yet.

In addition to being a varsity member of the Chisholm Trail cross-country team, Hernandez was also a member of the Texas School of Karate in Blue Mound.

A GoFundMe account has been set up in the name of Angel Rey Hernandez to help offset funeral expenses.

We are all completely devastated by the loss of Angel too early in life. With the devastation also comes the high cost of arrangements that no one was prepared for. We want to make sure the Hernandez family can give Angel the memorial and celebration he deserves, to honor his memory, and pay all our respects to an amazing young man.
