Tim McGraw gets funky in a new duet he's released with country singer-songwriter Shy Carter. "Way Down" shows McGraw keeping pace with the times, but still celebrating the roots of his music.

The song features a heavy funk-blues groove that's very traditional, but the production on the track is very contemporary and even features Carter in a rap breakdown. The lyrics to "Way Down" are essentially a travelogue of some of the most important locales that influenced roots music, name-checking Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and more.

Carter is best known as a songwriter who has written extensively for pop artists, as well as country acts including Sugarland, Kane Brown, Billy Currington and others. He has worked with McGraw previously, writing songs including "Speak to a Girl," a duet between McGraw and wife Faith Hill.

McGraw recently released a cover of the Cars classic "Drive," marking his first new music since he released" Thought About You" in October of 2018. The singer has not yet revealed the details of any upcoming album, but he tells Taste of Country that he still believes firmly in the album format, as opposed to just releasing a string of singles.

"For me, an album tells a story. I’ve always tried to do that with all my records," he states. "The way I developed musically and the way I learned to listen to music is through albums."
