These 9 East Texas Middle Schools Named Top 10% in The State

U.S. News & World Report has issued its yearly rankings of middle schools nationwide. That includes ranking the schools in Texas.

According to the report, the number one ranked middle school in Texas is Basis Austin Charter School.

How Did They Come Up With The Rankings?

According to their methodology page, U.S. News & World Report used the following criteria to rank schools:

...schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments. Half of the formula assessed the scores themselves and the other half incorporated the test results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are all high-achieving and have succeeded at educating all their students.

Breaking Down the Texas Middle School Data

The rankings report included 4069 middle schools in Texas. Around half of those received an 'unranked' rating. That's usually due to the school not reporting enough numbers used within the ranking algorithms. Many schools with very small enrollments fall into that category.

Schools across the state received an exclusive ranking between 1 and 1494. Those schools that received a ranking beyond 1494 were grouped into one set of rankings numbered from 1495 to 1993.
