Tornado Watch in Effect for Lufkin, Nacogdoches Until 10 P.M.
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a tornado watch until 10 p.m. Saturday evening for most of Deep East Texas. The area counties under the watch include Angelina, Nacogdoches, Trinity, Polk, Tyler, Jasper, Newton, San Augustine, Shelby, and Sabine Counties.
This includes the cities of Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Hudson, Central, Central Heights, Martinsville, Woden, San Augustine, Center, Livingston, Groveton, Woodville, Jasper, Hemphill, Center, Huntington, Diboll and many others within these counties.
Persons in Houston, Rusk, Panola and Cherokee Counties are NOT INCLUDED in the tornado watch but should monitor rapidly changing weather conditions. Numerous severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings have been issued throughout the afternoon for areas near Kingwood, Cleveland and Liberty. Up to 8 inches of rain has also fallen in parts of those areas. A severe thunderstorm was reported late this afternoon near Melrose in eastern Nacogdoches County. Winds gusting up to 60 mph as well as scattered areas of hail were reported with this storm in eastern Nacogdoches, western San Augustine and southwestern Shelby Counties. No major damage or injuries were reported.
As of 6:45 p.m., an active tornado warning was in effect in parts of northern Hardin County. Persons in southeastern Polk, southern Tyler and southern Jasper Counties should keep aware of these dangerous storms as they move northeastward.
An approaching cold front could kick off more storms late tonight before the threat of severe weather ebbs before sunrise.
