A center man is behind bars at the Nacogdoches County Jail following a traffic stop Wednesday night, November 17, that led to the seizure of 1.2 pounds of crystal methamphetamine. A deputy with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a 2000 Chevy Tahoe for a license plate violation. The traffic stop occurred on FM 2863/Press Road, which is located just to the east of the hotel district on Highway 59 South in Nacogdoches.

A release from the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) indicates that upon contact with the driver, who gave a false name, the deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. That amount of crystal meth has an approximate street value of $5,000. The deputy also found a Smith & Wesson .357 pistol inside the vehicle along with other drug paraphernalia.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and was identified as Jerry Akins, 34, from Center, Texas. Akins was transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a 1st degree felony, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a 3rd degree felony, failure to ID – fugitive, a Class A misdemeanor, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
