And Then There Were Two

The Broaddus Lady Bulldogs and the Eula Lady Pirates are the only two teams remaining in the Class A, Division I girl's basketball playoffs. They will meet for the UIL Texas State Championship on Thursday, February 27 at 1 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Less than 12 hours after their victory over Neches in the State Semifinals, Broaddus was already loaded up on a bus heading for the Alamo City.

Broaddus (34-4) is ranked #2 in the state in Class A, while Eula (36-2) is Ranked #3. Both of these teams are stout with each showcasing numerous victories over state-ranked opponents.

A Look At the Lady Bulldog's Season

  • Their 4 losses have to come Martins Mill (#1 in Class 2A), Longview (Class 6A Bi-District Champs), Winnsboro (#2 Class 3A), and Rains (29-5 season record)
  • Among their victories, Broaddus has defeated Tenaha (#24 in Class 2A), Martins Mill (revenge victory), Lovelady (#15 in Class 2A), Chireno (#4 in Class 2A), Canton (#8 in Class 4A), Douglass (Class 2A Regional Semifinal Champs), Diboll (Class 3A Area Champs), Saltillo (#11 in Class A), Bridge City (#10 in Class 4A), Nueces Canyon (#16 in Class A), and Brookeland (#9 in Class A).
  • Broaddus also defeated Neches in the State Semifinal Game. Why Neches wasn't in the top 25 is one of the biggest oversights in rankings history. They proved their greatness in the playoffs with wins over #3 Gorman and the defending state champs, Newcastle, before falling to Broaddus on Tuesday.
  • They have defeated two teams that are playing for state championships as well in San Antonio (Martins Mill - defending state 2A champs and Saltillo).

Their two losses have come against Gorman and Nocona. Gorman was also ranked #3 in the state in Class A, they were defeated by Neches in the Area Round. Nocona is playing in the Class 2A - Division I state championship game against San Saba.

Among their victories, Eula has defeated Borden County twice (#16 Class A), Newcastle (#20 in Class A and defending state champs), Nazareth (#5 in Class A and playing in the Class A - Division II state title game), Hermleigh - twice (#6 in Class A), Westbrook (#7 in Class A), and Garden City (#13 in Class A).

What Will Take To Win The State Title?

Composure and Focus.

Broaddus has never been to the state tournament and it's been over 40 years for Eula. The atmosphere in the Alamodome will be exciting and electric which will lead to some nervous moments, especially early in the game.

The team that does the best job of keeping focused on doing their job on each possession, and keeping their composure when things are going against them will have a big advantage. Lack of composure usually leads to turnovers and silly fouls.

LET'S DO THIS, LADY BULLDOGS!
