UIL Title Hopes Continue for 7 Pineywoods Girls’ Basketball Teams
The quest for a state championship continues for 7 girls' basketball teams that call Deep East Texas their home. Broaddus, Brookeland, Diboll, Zavalla, Douglass, Tenaha, and Central Heights all have regional semifinal games on Monday or Tuesday.
Here's a look at those matchups.
Broaddus Lady Bulldogs (31-4) vs Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers (29-5)
Broaddus is #2 in the state and Nueces Canyon is #16 in this Class A - Division I showdown. The game will be played on Tuesday, February 18th at 6 p.m. at Thrall High School (about an hour northeast of Austin).
The Lady Bulldogs have won 12 straight, and a win would set up a possible regional championship game against Brookeland.
Brookeland Lady Cats (32-4) vs McMullen County Cowgirls (30-5)
This Class A - Division I regional semifinal game will be played on Tuesday, February at 6 p.m. at El Campo High School. Brookeland has won 14 straight games, and no team has been within 40 points of them during that stretch.
Brookeland comes in ranked number 9 in the state, while McMullen County checks in at number 15. The winner of this game gets the winner of the Broaddus/Nueces Canyon game.
By the way, McMullen County High School is located about an hour south of San Antonio.
Zavalla Lady Eagles (21-13) vs Medina Lady Bobcats (20-13)
The Lady Eagles steamrolled through their first two playoff opponents. Medina finished third in an extremely tough district.
This Class A - Division II matchup will be played on Tuesday, February 18 at 6 p.m. at Fayetteville High School (near La Grange). The winner of this game will meet the winner of the Abbott/San Isidro game.
Martins Mill Lady Mustangs (31-2) vs Tenaha Lady Tigers (31-6)
The Lady Mustangs were state champs in 2024, and they have been ranked #1 in Class 2A all year long. The Lady Tigers are ranked #24 and are riding a 17-game winning streak.
Tenaha is looking for some payback. Last year, Martins Mill squeaked by Tenaha, 43-40, four rounds deep in the playoffs.
This game is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at New Summerfield High School. The winner takes on the winner of the Douglass/Frost game.
Douglass Lady Indians (22-8) vs Frost Lady Polar Bears (26-9)
The Tribe used their smothering defense to hold #4 Chireno to just 18 total points in last week's area-round matchup. That 34-18 victory has propelled Douglass to a regional semifinal showdown with the Lady Polar Bears.
This game will also take place on Monday, February 17 at 6 p.m. at New Summerfield. The winner of this Class 2A -Division II game will get the winner of the Martins Mill/Tenaha game.
Diboll Ladyjacks (26-4) vs Little River Academy Bumblebees (29-5)
Diboll has reeled off 11 straight victories while LRA has won 13 in a row. The Bumblebees are ranked #8 in Class 3A. Even though the Ladyjacks are unranked, I think they relish the role of underdogs and could be a very tough foe against a top-ten team.
Madisonville High School will be the site of this Class 3A - Division I playoff game. It will take place on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. tip. The winner gets the victor of the Fairfield/Hitchcock game.
West Lady Trojans (19-14) vs Central Heights Lady Devils (16-8)
This Class 3A - Division II regional semifinal game will be played on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Eustace High School.
The winner will take on either Keene or Kountze in the next round. What better way to celebrate the school's centennial celebration than with a victory and a trip to the regional championship?
