Chemical Spill Shuts Down 59 Near Garrison, Causes Evacuations
According to releases from the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Transportation, Highway 59, just south of Garrison, is currently closed due to a crash and resulting HazMat spill. Identification of the chemical is still ongoing, however, according to the Sheriff's Department, they do believe the chemical could pose a threat to the immediate area.
Law enforcement has started evacuating residents a half mile in each direction from the spill site. Garrison school is in lockdown as a precaution. Nacogdoches fire departments and are volunteer fire departments are on scene.
TxDOT crews are currently setting up a detour at US 259 in Nacogdoches and US 84 in Timpson. Motorists should prepare for lengthy delays as this scene clears. Reduce speed and stay alert for the detour and all traffic control in the area. Please avoid the area, if possible.
