Willie Nelson Helps Honor Chicago Cubs in ‘Someday’ Nike Commercial
Nike drafted a classic tune from Willie Nelson for a commercial celebrating the Chicago Cubs' historic World Series win on Wednesday (Nov. 2).
The Cubs beats the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series on Wednesday night, in a thrilling 10-inning game that saw them finally edge past the Indians 8-7, according to CBS News.
They broke a World Series drought that went back 108 years with the victory, marking their first World Series championship since 1908 and setting off celebrations all over Chicago, and Nike celebrated the historic victory with a new commercial that aired right after the final out of the game.
Titled "Someday," the spot uses the classic Nelson tune "Funny How Time Slips Away" to accompany images of a young boy dressed in a Cubs uniform determinedly practicing baseball at a local sandlot, first working on his pitching, then his batting, nurturing his own dreams of baseball greatness one day.
Billy Walker first released the song as a single in 1961, and it's gone on to be widely covered by the likes of Ray Price, the Supremes, Elvis Presley and George Jones, among many others. But it is Nelson's own inimitable phrasing of the evergreen tune that graces the commercial spot, which Adweek calls "a lovely, quiet salute to the positive spirit of the team during its 2016 playoff run."
Wieden + Kennedy produced the Nike ad, which was the latest installment of its Make Someday Today campaign. The campaign helped rally the city of Chicago during the World Series, featuring "living" out-of-home ads that included billboards reacting to actual action during the games, Adweek reports.
