The City of Nacogdoches has announced promotions in the command structure of the Nacogdoches Fire Department. Michael Brown has been named 13th Fire Chief after serving as the Interim Fire Chief since February of 2023, while Michael Self has been named the Assistant Fire Chief after serving as an interim in that role since February of 2023.

Brown has worked for the City of Nacogdoches in some capacity since before 1999, beginning as a seasonal laborer for the Parks and Recreation Department before shifting to the Fire Department and serving as a Firefighter, Driver-Engineer, Fire Captain and Division Chief – Fire Marshal along the way. Brown serves as the East Branch Coordinator for the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS), coordinating firefighting and rescue operations throughout the state.

“I am extremely privileged and excited to be allowed to lead and work with the phenomenal men and women that make up the Nacogdoches Fire Department, to continue to serve the great people and community of Nacogdoches, and to further the long tradition of excellence that exists in the NFD”, said Brown. “I am deeply honored by the trust the City Manager and City Council have placed in me to lead this great organization."

Self has served the City for 21 years with the Nacogdoches Fire Department, where he has served as a Firefighter, Driver, Captain, Administrative Captain, and Division Chief/Emergency Management Coordinator. He has been the City’s primary Emergency Management specialist since December of 2019.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this capacity under Chief Brown”, said Self. “I look forward to serving the citizens of Nacogdoches and the members of this department to the best of my ability. As a lifelong resident of Nacogdoches, this means a great deal to me and I hope to build on the foundation that has been laid by those that came before me.”
