A legend of county music will be heading to East Texas in September.  John Conlee will be performing at the Pines Theater in Downtown Lufkin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 19.

Through his career, Conlee has had over 30 singles hit the charts.  He's had 7 number one songs which include "Lady Lay Down", "Backside of Thirty", "Common Man", "I'm Only in it for the Love", "In My Eyes", "As Long As I'm Rockin' with You" and "Got My Heart Set on You."

It's interesting to note that John Conlee's signature song, "Rose Colored Glasses", never made it to number one on charts.  It was his first song to make it to the charts (it reached number 5 on the Billboard chart), and at that time hardly anyone was familiar with his music.  No doubt if that song had been released a few months after Conlee had established himself, it would easily have been another number one for him.

Conlee hails from Versailles, Kentucky.  Before launching into country stardom, he held jobs as a mortician and radio DJ.  Some years ago, I had the privilege of interviewing John Conlee for a radio station.  I remember asking him about the differences in country music during his powerhouse years of the 1980s and that of the artists and music of today (this was back around 2000). He said one of the most noticeable differences is that it's sometimes hard to tell one artist from the next in today's music, but back when he was pumping out the hits, many artists had a signature sound about them.  There's no arguing that point.  Whenever you hear the likes of Conlee, or John Anderson, or George Jones or Conway Twitty, you can immediately identify them.

Tickets for Conlee's show at The Pines are going fast.  Standard seats are $37 and premium seats are priced at $52.  Click here to see the seating chart and which tickets are still available.
