The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1st through November 30th, and there are a couple storm systems that are showing some promise of development.

We'll start with the area of disturbed weather that could possibly pose the soonest threat to the U.S.  As of early Monday morning, a broad area of low pressure was located near the Yucatan Peninsula extending into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. This low still lacks a well-defined center of circulation, however, gradual development is expected through Tuesday.  Varying models compiled by Levi Cowan at Tropical Tidbits predict that the system could make landfall Wednesday or Thursday somewhere along the coastline of Louisiana, however, residents along the upper Texas coast should also be wary.

A second area of concern involves a system located several hundred miles east-southeast of the southern Windward Islands.  This has already developed into Tropical Storm Bret with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.  Gradual development of this system is expected over the next day or two, before it could weaken into a depression of the central Caribbean basin.

Depending upon any future development, we could soon be talking about Tropical Storm Cindy in the Gulf of Mexico.  The entire list of named storms for 2017 is below.
