Fans of Sweet Home Alabama, rejoice — the wait for a sequel to the 2002 romantic comedy could become a reality! Those who enjoyed the original film will be pleased to know that actor Josh Lucas, who played Jake Perry in the film, is on board to make a sequel.

Reportedly, Reese Witherspoon would be also be open to reprising her role (as Melanie Smooter).

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lucas revealed the Academy Award-winning Actress is ready to return 'home' again, saying: "I'm up for it. I know Reese's said she is as well."

Lucas' comments echo Witherspoon's own from-her-fingers interest in reprising her iconic role. In a 2016 Facebook Live chat, she remarked that she would happily star in a sequel.

"We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to call me, I would happily make a Sweet Home Alabama 2!" she said at the time.

There is more good news for a potential sequel, as Lucas says another key player is on board. "The director [Andy Tennant] is absolutely up for it. I spoke to him about it a couple of times recently," he says.

As for what fans can expect the main characters, Jake and Melanie, to be up to 17 years after the original film?

"The proposal that Andy Tennant — the director — had, which was quite interesting, is that my character is back in Alabama, and Reese’s character is in New York with our kids and we're divorced, so [their] whole life is super complicated," he dishes.

For now, the creation of a sequel remains up to Witherspoon, at least according to Lucas. "... I think the person who's the one to put it together is Reese, so I'm hoping," he continues. "Who knows? She's got a lot of irons in the fire to say the least. Hopefully this is one of them."

With Witherspoon set to revive another one of her most iconic characters, Elle Woods, for Legally Blonde 3, there could be even more hope for a Sweet Home Alabama 2.
