A Severe Thunderstorm Watch Has Been Issued for 30 Counties in East and Southeast Texas

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch effective until 5 a.m. for the Brazos Valley, southeast Texas, and portions of the Pineywoods.

30 Counties Are Included in This Watch

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Calhoun, Chambers, Colorado, Dewitt, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Goliad, Gonzales, Grimes, Harris, Houston, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Liberty, Madison, Matagorda, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Victoria, Walker, Waller, and Washington Counties.

This includes the cities of Houston, Galveston, Conroe, Livingston, and Bryan/College Station.

What About Lufkin and Nacogdoches?

Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties are NOT included in this watch area. However, another watch encompassing more counties in Deep East Texas may be issued.

Regardless, as indicated in the map above, Lufkin and Nacogdoches have a high probability of late-night thunderstorms, some of which may be strong or severe.

Primary Threats Within the Watch Area

Forecasters are warning residents in the watch area that scattered damaging winds are possible, some with isolated gusts to 80 mph. Scattered hail is also possible, with some isolated large to very large hail events.

A spin-up tornado could occur within some of these storm cells.

Flooding has been reported in central Texas as this storm system moved through this evening. Some downpours could produce isolated flooding, especially in southeast Texas.

Precautions

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings.

Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.
