Today is Sunday, May 24. It was expected to be a 'washout'. Friday, the National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for the entire Memorial Day weekend. It extended from McAllen to San Antonio to Houston/Galveston, and into Lufkin/Nacogdoches. The official forecast at that time indicated that 2.5 inches of rain would likely fall throughout Angelina and Nacogdoches counties on Sunday alone.

Forecast Reversal for East Texas

Meteorology is a science---but definitely not an exact one. The forecast for Lufkin/Nacogdoches has undergone some drastic changes. Instead of a 90% chance of storms on Sunday and a 60% on Monday, it's now 0% and 20%, respectively. The 2.5 inches of expected rainfall has now dropped to one/tenth of an inch of rain. The Flood Watch for Angelina, Nacogdoches, Polk, Sabine, Shelby, San Augustine, and Trinity counties has been dropped. In fact, the Flood Watch for the entire state has been discontinued. Yup, that's what I call an inexact science.

The Next Chance of Heavy Downpours

Meteorologists are now pointing to Wednesday, May 27, as the next best chance of heavy downpours. The official forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, with widespread accumulations of 1 to 2 inches. But, given the curve balls that Mother Nature has been throwing during the spring, you may want to take this forecast with a 'rain' of salt.
