The 73rd Annual Angelina County Fair presented by Brookshire Brothers is underway.  The George H. Henderson Jr. Expo Center will be home to hundreds of area students showing off their projects, animals, food and much more.

The fair gets underway Monday and continues through Saturday.  It has become a tradition on the Merrell in the Morning Show on KICKS 105 to feature youngsters who received awards for Best in Show, Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion.  That will start up again on Wednesday morning (there's the potential of dangerous weather Tuesday morning, so there will be no interviews that day).

Through the past few years, the Angelina County Fair has added numerous other events.  The stick horse rodeo for the little ones is always a fan favorite.  Saturday's BBQ Cook-off will feature quite a few teams cooking up their best for bragging rights. There will be live music on Wednesday and Thursday nights from Tyler and Kelsey Hendricks, and Jack Pigg.

One of my favorites is the Reach for the Stars Livestock Show.  This event features youngsters with special needs and allows them to have their time in the arena showing pigs, rabbits, goats and more.  Find out more about the Reach for the Stars Livestock show here.

The culmination of the fair is the awards program on Saturday afternoon, followed by the sale at 4 p.m.  Numerous businesses, organizations and individuals either purchase and or give money to help purchase projects. This money is used by exhibitors to either recoup expenses, purchase a new project for next year, or go towards college tuition.

Hundreds of local residents give money to the 'buyer's pool'. These smaller cash donations are combined with others and this adds up to some impressive cash payouts in the auction.
