Two 18-Wheelers Crash in Lufkin, Police Issue Hwy 59 Advisory
Advisory Statement from the City of Lufkin Police Department
A portion of College Drive, from Daniel McCall Drive to South First Street, will be closed for several hours as crews respond to an accident involving two 18-wheelers, one of them a vehicle transport truck with multiple vehicles on board.
The incident occurred at 5:10 a.m. on the southbound side of U.S. 59/South First Street, involving a car hauler and another commercial truck transporting sand. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
As of 6:15 a.m., inbound traffic on College Drive is blocked due to the car hauler obstructing the roadway. While traffic at the intersection of College Drive and South First is moving, the southbound side is reduced to one lane.
As cleanup progresses, some lanes—especially southbound—may need to be closed at various times. Lufkin Police are advising motorists to avoid the area if possible, drive with caution, observe emergency personnel, and expect delays.
This marks the second major accident involving two 18-wheelers on Highway 59 on the south side of Lufkin. That accident happened in mid-September at the intersection of Highway 59 and Farm to Market Road 324 (Southwood Drive). One driver received minor injuries in that accident.
Remember, construction is ongoing on Highway 59 south of Lufkin which could add to the traffic issues throughout this morning's cleanup process.
