Get The Kids Registered For Mutton Busting At The Lufkin Rodeo

The 2026 Angelina Benefit Rodeo is April 22-25 at the George H. Henderson, Jr. Expo Center in Lufkin. The Lufkin Host Lions Club will once again present the rodeo, which features four exciting nights of professional rodeo entertainment. Events such as bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and saddle bronc riding will be featured. This year's event will act as a qualifying rodeo for the upcoming world-famous Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Mutton Busting at the Angelina Benefit Rodeo

One of the biggest crowd favorites at the rodeo is the championship mutton busting. Every night of the rodeo, 12 young cowboys and cowgirls try their best to stay on the back of a sheep while the furball races down the arena floor. Whoever gets the top score each night wins a championship trophy

Boot Barn in Lufkin is taking registrations for the competition. Just one registration per child per daily visit at Boot Barn will be allowed. Anyone found stuffing the registration box will be disqualified. Riders must be 5 to 9 years old and weigh under 60 pounds (a scale will be used each night of the rodeo). A safety vest and helmet will be provided to each rider.

The drawing for the 12 nightly mutton busters will take place during the KICKS 105 Road Show at Boot Barn on Tuesday, April 21.  The Road Show will be from 3-5 p.m., and the first drawings will take place just a few minutes after 3. Representatives of the Lufkin Host Lions Club will contact the parents of those chosen. Forty-six contestants will be drawn at Boot Barn during the Road Show.  The other two will be drawn through the KICKS 105 App (enter below). Those two riders will be drawn during the Merrell in the Morning Show on Tuesday, April 21.
