61 Country Father’s Day Songs Perfect for His Special Day

Before we get into these songs that pay tribute to dads, here's a quick backdrop to the history of Father's Day. It was first celebrated in the state of Washington in 1910, however, it didn't become a national holiday until 1972.

One of the fun facts that I used to pass along on the radio every year was that Father's Day is the one day of the year when the most collect phone calls are made.  However, collect phone calls are infrequent these days, and most of the younger generations probably have never heard of them.

My dad passed away over a decade ago, but the memories of holding the flashlight for him or watching him put on his firefighter's uniform are still freshly etched in my mind. I got my sense of humor from my father, so whenever you cringe at some of my dad's jokes, you can blame him for that.

2022 marks my 43rd year in radio.  Through those many years, I have played hundreds, if not thousands, of songs with some theme or mention about fathers. No other genre of music pays tribute to dads, mothers, and soldiers like country music.

I've definitely had my favorite dad-themed songs through the years. One of my favorites is Brad Paisley's 'He Didn't Have to Be'.  My dad was a foster child and that song brings back memories of the unconditional love that his foster parents (my grandparents) gave to him and his siblings. I tend to be a workaholic, and the song 'The Dollar' by Jamey Johnson puts things in perspective for me.
