Lufkin and Nacogdoches Under Flood Watch Through Memorial Day
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for most of the Memorial Day holiday weekend for numerous counties in Texas. This watch is in effect from Friday evening at 7 through Monday evening at 7. The watch area includes all of South Texas, much of the Austin/San Antonio Metro, all of the Texas coastal areas, the Houston/Galveston Metro, and portions of Deep East Texas (including Lufkin and Nacogdoches).
How Much Rain Is Expected For East Texas?
Recurring showers and thunderstorms over the holiday weekend are expected to dump 2 to 4 inches of rain, along with some isolated amounts of 6 inches across east and southeast Texas. Due to the slow movement of some of these cells, an inch or more of rain could fall in a short period of time in some areas, leading to possible flash flooding. Rain chances in East Texas will continue through much of next week, with another round of heavy rainfall expected on Wednesday, May 27. This may lead to another Flood Watch issuance.
Is Severe Weather Expected This Weekend?
While a few strong thunderstorms are possible over the next several days in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area, severe storms producing tornadoes, damaging winds, or hail are not anticipated. There is a marginal chance of severe storms on Saturday from west of Houston to Austin and throughout South Texas. Once again, the biggest threat from these storms should be the possibility of flooding.
