Excessive Rainfall Alert Now Includes Lufkin and Nacogdoches
Lufkin, Nacogdoches, and a good chunk of Deep East Texas are shaded yellow in the latest Excessive Rainfall Outlook from the Weather Prediction Center. This map represents the forecast for Tuesday, July 23.
What Exactly Does This Mean?
In simple terms, it means that anyone living in the yellow-shaded area should remain alert for possible flash flooding on this day.
In more complex terms, anyone living in the yellow-shaded area has at least a 15% risk of experiencing rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance within 25 miles of a point. In other words, you have a 15% chance of being within 25 miles of flash flooding.
I think I'll go with the simpler explanation.
A Wet Week for East Texas
As predicted, the rainfall started across the Pineywoods on Monday. Off-and-on showers with possible heavy downpours are expected to continue through Thursday. That could lead to isolated flash flooding in some locations.
For Wednesday, the majority of the flood threat shifts more toward the Texas coastline, however, Lufkin, Diboll, Hudson, and Huntington are still included in this slight (yellow) risk area.
Severe Weather Chances
Even though heavy downpours along with some thunderstorms are possible, the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma is not expecting any of the storms to reach severe limits. Still, the threat of frequent lightning and gusty winds near thunderstorms is possible.
The silver lining with all the rain and cloud cover is that our temperatures will be quite a bit lower than normal. The high temps are not expected to get above 83 through Thursday.
