If you've attended an NBA or a major college basketball game over the past several years, you may have experienced a high-tech audio/visual approach at the beginning of the game to hype up the fans and transition into the introduction of the starting lineups. This technology is called Court Projection Mapping.

What is Court Projection Mapping?

High-powered digital projectors are used to project 3D images and videos onto a screen; in this case, the screen is the basketball court. Arena lights are turned off and amazing audio is synced to the visuals for an awesome, immersive experience. Here's a look at an opening court projection sequence from a few years ago for the Atlanta Hawks.

Is This Technology Only Available to Big-Budget Programs?

NBA court projection systems can run up to a million dollars or more. Major colleges can easily pay deep into six figures. That kind of price tag usually makes this technology something not budgeted for at smaller colleges, and certainly not at high schools.

However, a company called Luxedo has been marketing its on-court projection systems towards high schools. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of an NBA-caliber system, but it will still make for an awesome high school experience. Discover how it has enhanced the entertainment value at McMinn High School in Tennessee.

Fort Stockton Is The First HIgh School in Texas To Install Luxedo

Fort Stockton is a small 4A Texas high school situated in the western part of Texas. Last week, their girls' basketball team became the first high school team in the state to feature the Luxedo court projection system.

I couldn't find an exact amount of how much a system like this would go for in places like McMinn or Fort Stockton, but they obviously found a way to cover the expenses, perhaps through sponsorships or athletic booster fundraising. Maybe we will see a few more of these court projection experiences popping up at Texas high school basketball games, or how about at SFA games at the Sawmill?
