Twenty-four Lufkin firefighters completed an 80-hour Hazardous Materials Technician course, further strengthening the department’s ability to respond to a wide range of emergencies across the region.

This advanced training prepares the department’s Hazmat team to handle incidents involving hazardous chemicals, including those that may result from 18-wheeler accidents or train derailments—both of which are real possibilities in a city like Lufkin, where major highways and rail lines intersect.

“This training is part of our commitment to being ready for any emergency,” said Fire Chief Jesse Moody. “We train for every type of emergency. Our crews prepare for fires, EMS calls, hazardous materials situations, and they are trained in technical rescues, including swift water, confined spaces, trench rescues, and high angle rescues. It’s a big job with a lot of tasks, but our team is ready.”

During the course, firefighters trained in the use of specialized protective suits and practiced techniques for identifying and stopping liquid leaks from pipes and metal drum containers.

A critical part of the training included decontamination procedures, where team members learned how to thoroughly clean hazardous materials suits using large brushes and approved cleaning agents to ensure no chemical residue remains.

The Hazmat team also plays a vital role in environmental protection. Their training emphasizes keeping hazardous chemicals out of the water supply and air, helping to preserve the health and safety of the community and the environment.

In addition to serving the City of Lufkin, the department’s Hazmat team provides mutual aid to surrounding communities. Lufkin Fire Department is currently the only team in the region trained to this level, making them a critical resource for neighboring areas in times of need.
