Mark’s Road Trip Ideas for 2026 – Gruene
Deep East Texas is my place. I was born and raised here. After 31 years, I'm still here. However, I do enjoy a good road trip. Not extensively long, multi-week treks, but I do enjoy taking a few days of vacation to go places.
As I was sitting there thinking about road trips, several places came to mind. One of the top ones is Gruene.

Now, you may recall that I enjoy spending time at the dance hall. Gruene makes for a great place to go if that's how you like spending time dancing or just listening to live music. There's Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, so it's woven into the DNA of the community. But Gruene Hall isn't the only place to hear live music. There are several venues in that small area to catch live music and enjoy it.
I understand that some of you are saying that music is good, but you don't want your entire trip to revolve around it. Gruene is still a great choice for that. There are all kinds of shops to visit, if you're the shopping kind of person. Lots of nifty stores, boutiques and vendors have spaces for you to check out while you're there.
And of course, you have to check out the food scene while you're roaming through. The Gruene community has you covered there, too. You can find everything from southern-style cuisine, to Mexican food, to pizza. It can all be found there. Don't believe me? Check out the burrito I found last time I visited:
Convinced yet? Maybe you're saying, "There's still not enough for us to do there..." While I disagree with this statement, I will say this: You can still use some time to go into the city of New Braunfels. There, you can hit a movie theater, get to national chain stores and other things. I would encourage you to stay in Gruene for the entirety of the trip, but you do have other options if you need them for a day or two. These are just my thoughts.
