The Lufkin Police Department has received numerous calls today from concerned residents and business owners about a scam attempt by a caller claiming to be with the city’s water department.

According to a press release from the LPD,  the male caller demanded immediate payment via credit card over the phone to prevent the water from being cut off at four Lufkin-area businesses. In an attempt to legitimatize the scam, the caller even gave the water department’s direct line for the contact number.
Instead of paying the bill over the phone, several would-be victims alertly contacted the water department only to learn that they did not owe money, according to Sandra Silva, water department accounting clerk.
“We only send out notification through the mail when someone is delinquent on their water bill,” Silva said.
Anyone who has fallen victim to the scam or has been contacted, should call the department at 633-0356.
