As of this posting, 104 counties in Texas are under a burn ban. All but 7 of those counties are located west of Interstate 45. Those 7 counties are right in the heart of the East Texas Pineywoods.

The 7 Deep East Texas Counties Under a Burn Ban

Houston and Shelby Counties are the East Texas counties that have been under a burn ban the longest. Then, Angelina County was added last week. Trinity, Polk, Cherokee, and Panola Counties have most recently joined the 'flame-out' club.

What Happens If You Start An Outdoor Fire in These Counties?

First, the dry conditions could cause a small burn pile to turn into a raging brush fire in a matter of minutes. It's not smart, not safe, and a pretty selfish thing to do. Beyond that, if you're caught doing outdoor burning, it usually comes with a visit from law enforcement and a first-time warning. Sometimes, the offense can come with a stiffer punishment, such as a significant fine.

What's Causing the Burn Bans?

Easy answer, no rain. The East Texas summer wasn't too bad as far as rainfall goes, but since September, downpours have been few and far between. Lufkin is over 2 inches above normal in rainfall for the year, but since the start of September, Angelina County is over 4 inches below normal

More Burn Bans On The Way?

The East Texas forecast for the next 7 days continues to be relatively dry. There is a slight chance of rain on Tuesday (20%), but no widespread significant rainfall is expected through October 13. If that forecast holds, I think it's safe to say that more burn bans will be issued over the next several days.
