TxDOT Seeks Input Concerning Changes on Highway 59 North of Lufkin
The look and layout of Highway 59 between Lufkin and Redland will be changing over time. This evening, the Lufkin District of the Texas Department of Transportation is hosting an Open House to gather public comments regarding these plans as that area of Highway 59 will be upgraded to Interstate standards.
The Open House is this evening (June 27th) from 4-7 p.m. at the TxDOT Lufkin District Office, 1805 N. Timberland Drive in Lufkin. The proposed project on US 59 (future I-69) includes the reconstruction of the main lanes to interstate standards with new frontage roads from south of FM 2021 to north of US 59/SL 287 in Lufkin.
This project would improve the roadway to meet interstate standards, enhance safety and improve mobility along US 59, provide a more efficient hurricane evacuation route and provide system connectivity to I-69. The project would also include controlled access, which means access to the main lanes of US 59 would be provided via entrance and exit ramps.
The public will have access to layout designs of the project at the event and engineers and officials will be available to answer questions, explain where TxDOT is within the development process and hear public input. The Open House will be held in a come-and-go format to allow the public to visit one-on-one regarding the project.
“This is a great opportunity for the public to see the plans and discuss the future of Interstate 69 and its development in this area of Angelina County,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District. “As we move forward in upgrading US 59 to meet interstate standards, we are able to do that in sections through several construction projects. We encourage the public to give us their comments regarding this project. Public input is vital to the design and success of any project.”
Comments must be received by July 12 to be included in the official record. Comments may be submitted online through www.txdot.gov on the Lufkin District web page, by mail to 1805 N. Timberland Drive, Lufkin, TX 75901 or by calling the district office. Those who require special communication or require accommodation assistance to attend the event should contact the district office.
