It truly hurts my heart to report another fatality in our area that is the result of an auto-pedestrian accident.  Anyone travelling on Highway 259 this morning (12/15) in Central Heights no doubt saw all the emergency vehicles and possibly assumed the worst.  Those fears were confirmed with a press release issued around 11 this morning.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reporting that they are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian crash on U.S. Highway 259 at County Road 104 today, December 15.  That location is next to the Central Heights Independent School District and Bonita United Methodist Church.

The preliminary investigation from officers at the scene indicates that at approximately 5:20 a.m., a 2012 Nissan Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was traveling northbound on Highway 259 when a pedestrian attempted to cross the highway. The SUV struck the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, identified as 68-year-old Mardella Nooner of Nacogdoches was pronounced deceased on the scene by a Nacogdoches Justice of the Peace. The driver, was identified as a 38-year-old female of Hallsville. She was not injured. The media release did identify the name of the driver of the vehicle, we have chosen not to release her name.  We know she must be dealing with a terrible heartache and burden right now.  The last thing we want is for people to start trying to find her through social media pages.

Please keep the victim, the driver, their friends and family, first responders and witnesses to this tragic accident in your prayers.

There has been an unexplainable rash of auto-pedestrian accidents in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area over the past month.  Many of those leading to fatalities.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing, no additional information at this time.
