Thursday’s Threat of Flash Flooding in East Texas Raised to HIGH

There is some very good news on the horizon for East Texas, but before we can get to that, let's talk about the bad...and dangerous.

A storm system will push across East Texas and western Louisiana today and tonight and bring severe storms and high rainfall amounts.

Flash Flooding Risk

The magenta color on the map above is not good. Anyone living in that area (Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Livingston, San Augustine to name a few) is at a high risk of flash flooding today and tonight.

Specifically, you have a 70% chance of being within 25 miles of flash flooding occurring at your location. Two to six inches of rain is possible, with some places possibly receiving more.

The saturated ground and swollen creeks and rivers make this an especially dangerous situation. Moderate to high flash flooding outlooks are in effect for much of East Texas all the way to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Severe Storms Are Also a Possibility

As if the flooding potential wasn't bad enough, East Texans need to be on the lookout for severe storms during the afternoon and nighttime hours on Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of central and east Texas along with parts of western Louisiana in the enhanced zone for severe weather.

A few tornadoes are a possibility in this zone, however, the biggest severe weather threat for East Texas, as indicated by the map below, will come from straight-line wind damage. Some storm squalls could bring winds that gust to over 60 mph.

A large to very large hail threat is expected from central Texas through much of the Hill Country.

But, Then...The Good News

There will be a slight chance of rain on Friday, but after that, forecasters are expecting dry and very warm weather for the Pineywoods through at least next Wednesday.
