Round 2 of significant ice accumulations is expected to happen overnight in East and Southeast Texas and into Louisiana. Major travel issues and numerous power outages happened Saturday morning in areas north of Nacogdoches; however, tonight the heaviest accumulations are expected further south.

According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service, areas around Lufkin and Nacogdoches could still receive between 0.2 and 0.4 of an inch of ice accumulation overnight. But the 6-hour interval forecast between midnight and 6 am Sunday shows a narrow swath from west of Houston to Jasper that could get the heaviest periods of precipitation.

The forecast map above indicates that cities like Sealy, Cleveland, Livingston, Corrigan, and Jasper are expected to be in the path of the heaviest ice accumulation totals overnight. Of course, this is not an exact science, so there are no guarantees for these numbers.

Regardless, emergency management officials are strongly encouraging residents of Deep East Texas and southeast Texas to remain indoors and to avoid travel. Just a tenth of an inch of ice can cause hazardous driving conditions, while a quarter inch of ice can lead to widespread power outages.

An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for Sunday night as low temperatures throughout East Texas are forecast to dip into the teens and the single digits. Keep up with weather alerts by downloading our station app.
