Just 30 minutes after issuing a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (STW) for a large swath across central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and portions of east Texas, the Storm Prediction Center has now issued a second STW that includes much of the central section of east Texas.

I don't know why the Storm Prediction Center didn't just include these Texas counties in the first watch issued. They both end at 1 a.m. Maybe they had not reached their ink quota for the week.

The primary threats include scattered large hail with isolated very large hail events up
to 2.5 inches in diameter. There could also be scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible. A tornado or two is also possible.

That may be the reason for the two separate watch areas. The tornado chances are considered very low for the Central Texas watch, while it's low for the East Texas watch.

The east Texas counties included in this new watch include:

Angelina, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, and Smith.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.
