Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued from Central to East Texas
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 1 a.m. for a large swath across central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and portions of east Texas.
The watch includes the cities of New Braunfels, Austin, Waco, Crockett, Athens, and Palestine. The watch area may be extended eastward later in the evening.
A cold front is advancing across the Lone Star State and forecasters expect thunderstorms to continue developing along a cold front through the evening. The main threat from these storms will be large hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter, roughly the size of ping pong balls.
There will also be some risk for strong to severe winds, potentially up to 60-70 mph. An isolated tornado may develop, but that risk is considered very low.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Download our station app for alerts to be sent to your smartphone.
