Texas At Risk of Tornados, Flooding Due to Multiple Storm Systems

• Texans Should Be Alert for Flooding and Severe Weather Through Sunday

• 10 Inches of Rain or More Could Fall Along The Coastal Bend

• East and Southeast Texas Is At Risk of Severe Weather Friday and Sunday

Texas is at the heart of a concerning series of weather events that will take place through Sunday. Threats of flooding, damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes are all in play.

Sunday's Severe Weather Threat

Let's start with one of the more worrisome maps

The map above from the Storm Prediction Center lays out the severe weather threat from 7 a.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday. There are a lot of uncertainties and variables at play in a 'medium-range' forecast such as this...and that's why this is so concerning.

Even though we are 5 days out, the Storm Prediction Center has enough confidence to issue a level 2 or 5 severe threat risk for this massive area shaded in yellow. Tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail are all possible, but to what extent will come more into focus over the next 2-3 days.

Coastal Bend Flooding Threat

Numerous downpours are expected through Thursday night for an area bounded by San Antonio to Corpus Christi to Victoria. A Flood Watch and Flood Warning are currently in place. Flash flood warnings are almost a certainty.

The National Weather Service expects 7-10 inches of rain to fall around the Coastal Bend. Some computer models show isolated amounts of better than a foot of rain falling in some areas.

This area needs rain, but that much that quickly could be catastrophic.

Friday's Severe Weather Threat

The slow-moving system responsible for the flooding will move eastward and bring the possibility of heavy rain and severe weather to most of East Texas.

Much of the southern half of East Texas can expect upwards of two inches of rain, or more, throughout Friday.

A 'marginal' severe weather threat (dark-green shaded area) is in place from San Antonio to Houston to the ArkLaTex for Friday. Damaging winds and a brief tornado are the biggest threats at this time.
