See Into The Future Of Lufkin Forward Project In Downtown
A remodel of downtown Lufkin approved in 2021 has started in earnest. We are two weeks into the project, and downtown businesses are already feeling the pinch.
Shop Downtown Lufkin, Visit Lufkin, and Lufkin Forward have all reiterated to citizens that downtown Lufkin is open for business. They have been releasing images like this one of the locations to park mapped out in green.
The existing roads on First Street Downtown are in the process of being torn out. The current construction reminds me of old photos of our downtown when it was a dirt road.
It's just a short walk from any parking areas to the businesses in the affected areas in purple. Though things are fenced off, the sidewalks are clear and still open.
The Lufkin Forward project started on April 1, 2024, and should be done in October; just in time for the holiday shopping season.
This Is The Change Many Have Been Asking For In Downtown Lufkin
People in Lufkin have been asking for more inclusive sidewalk access in downtown Lufkin for years. This is what it takes to get that done.
Photos from Shop Downtown Lufkin of the demo make me want to shop downtown and check out the progress for myself.
If you haven't seen the full vision of what First Street will look like when the project is complete take a look.

These growing pains are only temporary, and when it is complete downtown Lufkin will be a jewel. There will be all new lamposts, a grand entryway, wider sidewalks, and new landscaping and the colored lights across the streets will stay.
