Lufkin Police have released the name of the person who lost his life Sunday morning in a hit-and-run accident on Timberland Drive.  The deceased is identified as Gabriel Garcia, 53, of Lufkin.

Yesterday morning around 1:30, Lufkin Police officers responded to the accident which took place near the intersection of Timberland Drive and Paul Avenue, adjacent to Whataburger. Police said that the man was attempting to cross that intersection when he was struck by a car that did not stop. Witnesses coming out of Whataburger saw the victim lying in the road and called 9-1-1.

Garcia was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.  An autopsy has been ordered in the case.

During their investigation, Lufkin Police report that a witness came forward and told officers that they believed the suspect's vehicle was a gray or silver Chevy Impala.  That vehicle may have pulled into the Valero gas station several blocks north of the incident site. Officers went to the Valero and reviewed the surveillance video but did not find anything that helped the investigation.

Officers were able to recover a side mirror from the scene. The mirror is to the driver’s side of a 2006-2012 Chevy Impala, which matches witnesses accounts of the vehicle involved in the incident.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Department at 936-633-0356 or Crime Stoppers at 936-639-TIPS. Callers are allowed to remain anonymous.
