Lufkin PD Report Today’s Second Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting
For the second time in less than 24 hours, law enforcement in Angelina County were involved in an officer-involved shooting in which a suspect was fatally wounded.
According to a release from the Lufkin Police Department, Tuesday afternoon officers from Lufkin Police and a Deputy from the Angelina County Sheriff’s Department located a suspect who was wanted for a felony warrant from an incident where he choked his victim during a domestic violence assault. The suspect was a convicted felon, a registered sex offender and was also wanted by the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole with a warning that he has violent tendencies.
The Lufkin Police report goes on to say that when confronted, the suspect produced a handgun and aimed it at the deputy. The deputy shot the suspect causing the suspect to fall to the ground. While on the ground, the suspect reached for the handgun causing the Lufkin Police officer to also shoot the suspect. At that time, the gun was kicked away from the reach of the injured suspect.
After separating the pistol from the suspect both the officer and the deputy began lifesaving measures on the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital by EMS where he later died. This incident took place on North Raguet in Lufkin on the property of Big's Convenience Store, which for many years was Cherry's Grocery.
This investigation is in its early stages and will be investigated by the Texas Rangers as is the standard policy in officer-involved shootings.
In an ongoing effort of transparency, the Lufkin Police Department is releasing a portion of the officer’s body-worn camera video. That video can be seen here, but the scenes are graphic, and viewer discretion should be considered.
Early Tuesday morning, a suspect who pointed a gun at Lufkin Police near North Chestnut Drive was fatally shot. Find details and video with that story here.
