Will East Texas Catch On to the Cassette Comeback?
Cassette sales went up in 2016, and just like vinyl they could be making a huge comeback.
So it's time to get the Eddie Rabbit and Olivia Newton John out of the attic! Surely you have those too, right? Ok, too much info.
There were 129,000 cassettes sold in 2016, which is up from 74,000 in 2015, according to Nielsen Music. So it's not a ton and it doesn't take much to see a spike percentage-wise. But more people are gettin' into it.
Artists like Justin Bieber, Eminem, and Prince put out music on cassette last year, but most of the time that came with instructions on how to download a digital copy of the same music. Good, because we threw the old boom boxes away and have nothing to play these new-fangled cassettes on anyway.
Oh, and Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks have been available on cassette the past two years, along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Those have boosted sales and given you something to talk about at parties.
Think this trend will continue? If you've got plenty of time on your hands and you like to rewind and fast forward a lot, it may be just the thing you're looking for. We're sure you'll be able to find a nice, dusty cassette player at a garage sale in Nac to help your cause.
