Way to Go Woodville Cheerleaders, Silver Medal Winners at State
The Texas UIL Spirit State Championships were held January 16-18 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Hundreds of high school student-athletes competed in 1A through 6A, as well as Co-ed divisions. Those competing in the 3A-6A levels were split into large school/small school divisions.
East Texas was well represented this year, but it was the cheer team from Woodville High School that has been the talk of the Pineywoods.
Spirit Competition Format
Before we dive deeper into the accomplishments of the Woodville Cheer Team, here's a quick primer on the event's format.
All teams perform in their respective qualifying rounds. They are scored in three categories - band chant, fight song, and crowd leading. Teams with the highest cumulative scores from the Qualifying Round advance to the State Championship Round (not to exceed 20 teams).
Qualifying round scores do not carry over to the championship round.
Woodville Eagles Cheer Team
In the UIL Spirit Championships in 2024, Woodville participated in the Class 3A, Division 2 competition. The team's scores in the qualifying round were not high enough to get them into the championship round.
However, in this year's event, the team wearing gold and black not only advanced to the championship round but also had the highest score in the band chant category. Woodville also had the third-highest overall qualifying score.
Then, in the championship round, the squad from Woodville improved from third in the qualifying round, to state runner-up in the championships. I believe you can say they were excited.
Congratulations to the Woodville Cheerleaders and their sponsors and coaches for this outstanding achievement.
Krystal Hayes and Jamie Weaver coach the team. The cheerleaders are Caylee Castille, Bryleigh Clow, Gracen Cox, Makennah Fowler, Destiny Hadnot, Rhianna Hart, Shaniyan Hart, Sophie Hill, Kolbi Hutto, Hollie Jarrott, Cirvyve Lee, Harmoni Lewis, Haley Limbreck, Clair Lohman, Carlie Risinger, Kelsi Risinger, Marely Roque, Kimberli Scott, Ruby Shirley, Karson Weaver, and Rhea Williams.
Shout Outs to Other Deep East Texas Teams
Woodville was the only team from the Pineywoods to finish with a top 3 medal, but several other teams from Deep East Texas did advance to the championship round including Trinity (Class 3A - Division 2), Hudson (Class 4A - Division 2), Shelbyville (Class 2A), and Joaquin (Class 2A).
