Judging Goodies at the Pineywoods Fair in Nacogdoches
The Pineywoods Fair is underway at the Nacogdoches Expo and Civic Center. It continues through Sunday with the carnival midway and numerous events and fun activities.
A lot of Nacogdoches county youth representing various 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA clubs compete in competitions during the fair. Tuesday, October 11th, I had the chance to be a tasting judge at the baking competition. I had the honor of helping to score entries in the breads divisions. I learned that the taste of the entry is only a small part of the overall score. Texture, weight, shape, color, and consistency were also graded. It actually takes around 30 judges to sample and score some 150+ entries ranging from cakes, pies, candy, cookies, breads, and more.
I took some pictures of the competition room and of some of the entries. They were only identified by numbers so I was not able to include descriptions of the tasty treats.
