Lufkin Independent School District announced today that two Lufkin Middle School students involved in R2 GEAR UP will participate in the MAD-learn Virtual Student Showcase on Thursday, December 7.

Tabitha Bourlon, a 7th grader, and Jalexy Arellano, an 8th grader, developed a mobile app over the summer in the MAD-learn/ Mobile App Development Camp. The MAD-learn Student Showcase event will highlight students across the country presenting the apps they created using MAD-learn’s design thinking program.

"The virtual showcase is not only a celebration of CS Ed Week, but it will give students the opportunity to work on their presentation skills and hear from peers who also created apps, " said Robbie Kuykendall,  GEAR UP coordinator. "Our students will present the apps they created this summer and discuss how and why they chose their ideas."

The event will be a 1-hour virtual event beginning at 2 p.m., and the students will be on a Zoom video. They will show their apps and then participate in a question-and-answer segment with the opportunity to answer questions about their apps.

Jalexy's app is called Sport Fame, and Tabitha's app is titled Cake It.

"To say we are proud of these young ladies and their creativity and success is definitely an understatement," said Kuykendall.

Anyone who would like to watch the showcase may do so by registering here.
