This year’s concert event featured two acts that hail from Texas, so you know it had to be a party.  A special thanks to JB and the Moonshine Band and Casey James for the great shows that put on.  We’re already getting excited about the 4th annual Taste of Country Christmas Tour in 2013!

The Lufkin Panthers defeated the Pflugerville Panthers last Saturday and advanced to the third round of the State Playoffs.  They will play Plano West on Saturday, December 1st at 2:00 PM at Waco ISD.  If you want to see the boys in action, tickets are $25.

There will be a fan bus heading to Waco on Saturday morning – it will leave from Lufkin High School at 9:00 a.m. and return to Lufkin around 8:00p.m. on Saturday night (pending the game time).  You can purchase your ticket for the bus at the Lufkin Transportation building (next to Big Lots on Timberland drive) along with tickets to the game. You can also call them at 936-635-6270 for more information about the fan bus.

Support the Panthers and cheer them onto the next round of playoffs!  Go PACK!

It’s High School Football Playoff time again and the Lufkin Panthers have secured their spot in the the District 14-5 A competition. They’re in a 3-way tie for first place in their division with The Woodlands and A & M Consolidated.  They will play Spring Dekaney on Friday, November 16 at Sam Houston State.

The Panthers have enjoyed a winning season with the new Head Coach Todd Quick despite the loss of their Head Coach John Outlaw last Christmas.  They finish regular seaon play with a record of 7-3.  The playoff game will be broadcast next Friday night on KICKS 105, so be sure to listen if you can’t be in the stands and root for the Panthers as they travel to Sam Houston State.

He ended up taking the overall championship by a 16-pound, 5-ounce margin of victory due to his 5 fish haul of nearly 33 pounds!!

Night number one of the Texas State Forest Festival didn’t disappoint as teams from Angelina, Polk, and Shelby Counties competed in the annual KICKS 105 Pom Squad/Dance Team Championships sponsored by Academy of Gymnastics and Dance.

Over 100 teams entered this year’s 19th annual Dr. Bill Shelton Totally Awesome Fishing Adventure on Lake Sam Rayburn.  Most of the anglers said the fishing was tough, some having issues with even getting the maximum number of 5 fish for the weigh in.

However, Jerry and Lynda Crain of Lufkin had no such trouble.  They brought in five solid bass totaling just over 20 pounds, which was more than good enough to take home first place honors as well as a check worth over $2900.

Johnny Dewald of Zavalla was the winning fisherman who brought in the biggest single bass with a fish weighing 7.54 pounds.

Certainly, the biggest winners were the cancer patients who benefit from this tournament.  Over 19 years ago, Dr. Bill Shelton saw a major need in the East Texas area.  A number of cancer patients were having a hard time to even get gas money to make it in to Lufkin to receive cancer treatments.

Shelton saw this as unacceptable and he coordinated efforts to kick off this benefit fishing tourney and it gets bigger and better every year.

A big thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, and anglers who made this year’s tournament a huge success.

Newcomer Dustin Lynch and country artist Chris Cagle were the ones who really got the crowd going with hits such as ‘Cowboys and Angels’ and ‘Got My Country On’. Their amazing vocals and crowd interaction throughout the show was a big hit with the east Texas crowd.

I got a chance to meet Dustin Lynch and he is one of the sweetest southern guys you’ll ever meet! He was so polite and told me how grateful he was to be able to play for his fans in Nacogdoches. And oh yeah, his blue eyes and pearly whites weren’t all that bad either

Chris Cagle was a true gentleman as well. I got the chance to shuttle him and his band members from the hotel to the Expo Center throughout the day, and they shared some awesome stories about traveling, kids, and even told me a few secrets about the new album and borrowing Clay Walker’s bus for tours. Definitely looking forward to buying ‘Got My Country On’ when it comes out – it’s going to be a good one! Look for it to hit store shelves on Tuesday, May 29th.

It was another great night of mutton bustin’ at the Angelina Benefit Rodeo.

The top score of the night went to Gracie Parish of Pollok with a score of 90 points.  

Bree Anna Hodges was next with a score of 88, Garrett Goforth had a score of 86, and there was a tie for 4th between Chase Dykes and Chloe Fore each with a score of 80.

The best dressed artists at any given music awards show are often as news-making as the winners themselves, and tonight’s 2011 American Country Award’ best dressed were no exception. We want to bring special attention to adorable ‘American Idol’ duo Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, who both made our list of the ACAs’ most stylish, which is pretty impressive given their short awards show resume.

Alaina looked flawless in a girly pink and black dress as she beamed and showed off her post-weight loss figure. The ‘Like My Mother Does’ singer even completed her ensemble with a matching headband over perfect waves. Beside her on the red carpet, McCreery rocked the dressy-casual standard, leaning more on the casual side with an untucked button-up and boots. It was ‘Clear as Day’ (we can’t help it) that his wardrobe was carefully chosen, given the way the different tones complemented each other.

Also on our 2011 American Country Awards best dressed list: Carrie Underwood chose a flirty nude dress with matching accessories. Hoping not to detract from her feet, the singer sported subdued earrings and an updo — her pink and purple ankle-wrap stilettos truly stole the show.

Sibling trio the Band Perry came dressed to impress in coordinated black outfits, which lent to a more traditional awards show ensemble. Being that she’s the gorgeous blonde in the group, Kimberly pulled in the cameras, but her brothers deserve a nod, too.

Last but not least, we loved Thompson Square vocalist Shawna Thompson’s red carpet formal dress, which fell in a pattern of shapes at her feet, which were hidden by the length.

The 2011 American Country Awards were a huge success, with many of country music’s hottest stars traveling 2,000 miles from Nashville to Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena just to show their faces on the FOX network. Unfortunately, some of the outfits that the artists packed to wear to the event were not as big of a hit, which quickly landed them on our worst dressed list, as seen in this gallery of pictures.

Kristin Chenoweth, for one, did a great job co-hosting the big awards show with Trace Adkins — and we commend her for that — but the low-cut, emerald green gown that she wore on the red carpet was less than impressive. To be blunt, the Broadway singer’s ensemble seemed more homemade than designer, and not in the quirky do-it-yourself kind of way.

Fan favorite Miranda Lambert found herself in a similar blunder at Monday’s ACAs. While we typically love the ‘Baggage Claim’ singer’s choice of dress, her bedazzled black dress and big hair was more of a step back into the ’90s than a fashion forward move.

Representing the guys, Craig Campbell walked the red carpet in a mess of colors and fabrics, sporting a black cowboy hat, casual teal button-up with more of an evening wear velvet jacket, as well as a pair of strangely starched dark jeans. Our hats off to the ‘Fish’ singer, but we just weren’t feeling it. The same goes to Toby Keith, who has a bad style habit he just can’t seem to break and Thompson Square‘s Keifer Thompson, who, with his shiny disco attire, was clearly hoping to let his wife steal the spotlight — which she did.

The ‘roof was on fire’ when Jason Cassidy took the stage to open the show. The Texas native rocked the stage and got the crowd moving and singing with songs like ‘Honky Tonk Heaven‘, ‘Friday Night Fever’ and even a rap medley featuring songs from Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Troy.

Easton Corbin sang his hit songs ‘Roll With it’ and ‘I’m a Little More Country Than That’ as well as covered Gary Allan’s ‘Watching Airplanes’, Merle Haggard’s ‘Silver Wings’ and Kenny Chesney’s ‘Just Don’t Happen Twice’.   He also got the ladies singing and their hearts melting during a mellow performance of ‘I Just Can’t Love You Back.’

Rhett was able to get the sold out crowd at Banita Creek Hall up on their feet and fired up for the evening, while Gilbert rocked it on stage and gave fans an unforgettable show.Although a few rowdy fans were escorted out of the building during the concert, regardless of the singer’s several mentions to ‘”take it outside if you feel like fighting”, the show ran smoothly. The crowd was thrilled to hear some of Gilbert’s best songs like ‘Country Must Be Country Wide’, ‘My Kinda Party’ and ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ with Thomas Rhett rapping one of the verses.

Brantley Gilbert’s band members also took the time to take photos with eager fans outside of their tour bus, despite the ‘freezing’ weather conditions.
